Jazz Guitar Chords for Beginners: Your First Jazz Voicings

Jazz guitar sounds intimidating - those complex chords, the improvised solos, the theory-heavy reputation. But entry-level jazz guitar is surprisingly accessible. You need just three chord types and one progression to start sounding jazzy.

The secret: jazz chords are just regular chords with one extra note. Major becomes major 7th. Minor becomes minor 7th. Dominant becomes dominant 7th (or 9th). That’s the whole foundation.

The 3 Essential Jazz Chord Types

1. Major 7th (Cmaj7, Gmaj7, Fmaj7)

Formula: R – 3 – 5 – 7

Sounds dreamy, lush, sophisticated. Used for I and IV chords in jazz.

Cmaj7 (Root on 5th string):

e|---0---|
B|---0---|
G|---0---|
D|---2---|
A|---3---|
E|---x---|

Fmaj7:

e|---0---|
B|---1---|
G|---2---|
D|---3---|
A|---x---|
E|---x---|

2. Minor 7th (Dm7, Am7, Em7)

Formula: R – ♭3 – 5 – ♭7

Sounds cool, hip, and smooth. Used for ii, iii, and vi chords.

Dm7:

e|---1---|
B|---1---|
G|---2---|
D|---0---|
A|---x---|
E|---x---|

Am7:

e|---0---|
B|---1---|
G|---0---|
D|---2---|
A|---0---|
E|---x---|

3. Dominant 7th (G7, C7, D7)

Formula: R – 3 – 5 – ♭7

Sounds bluesy, tense, wants to resolve. Used for V chords and blues.

G7:

e|---1---|
B|---0---|
G|---0---|
D|---0---|
A|---2---|
E|---3---|

C7:

e|---0---|
B|---1---|
G|---3---|
D|---2---|
A|---3---|
E|---x---|

The ii-V-I Progression

This is THE jazz progression. 90% of jazz standards include ii-V-I at some point.

In C: Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7

That’s it. Three chords, each from the three types above. Play them in sequence, and you’re playing jazz harmony.

Key of C:

Dm7 (ii) → G7 (V) → Cmaj7 (I)

Key of G:

Am7 (ii) → D7 (V) → Gmaj7 (I)

Key of F:

Gm7 (ii) → C7 (V) → Fmaj7 (I)

Moveable Jazz Voicings

These barre-chord-based shapes can be moved to any key:

Major 7th (Root on 6th string)

e|---x---|
B|---5---|
G|---4---|
D|---5---|
A|---x---|
E|---3---| (root: G)

Minor 7th (Root on 5th string)

e|---x---|
B|---1---|
G|---2---|
D|---2---|
A|---3---| (root: C)
E|---x---|

Dominant 7th (Root on 6th string)

e|---x---|
B|---3---|
G|---4---|
D|---3---|
A|---x---|
E|---3---| (root: G)

Jazz Rhythm Techniques

The Freddie Green Strum

Short, clipped chord hits on beats 1, 2, 3, 4. Each hit is immediately muted. The comping pattern of big band jazz.

Rhythmic Comping

Varied rhythmic patterns - syncopation, anticipated chords, rhythmic displacement. Instead of steady quarter notes, comp with offbeats and accents.

Chord Melody Hints

The highest note of each chord can outline a melody. Choose voicings that put the melody on top.

Practice Exercises

Exercise 1: ii-V-I in 3 Keys

Play Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7 (Key of C). Then Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7 (Key of G). Then Gm7 → C7 → Fmaj7 (Key of F).

Exercise 2: Jazz Ballad Feel

Play ii-V-I at 70 BPM, holding each chord for 4 beats. Use the open voicings. Let the chords ring and sustain.

Exercise 3: Comping Rhythm

Play ii-V-I with a swing rhythm: strum on beat 1, anticipate beat 3 (play on the “and” of 2), strum on beat 3, rest beat 4.

Common Mistakes

1. Playing jazz chords with rock strumming. Jazz comping is rhythmically varied, not straight up-down strumming. Listen to jazz guitarists for the feel.

2. Skipping the ii-V-I. This progression is not optional in jazz - it’s the foundation. Master it in all keys.

3. Thinking jazz requires complex chords. Start with 7th chords. Extensions (9ths, 13ths) are advanced additions that come later.

FAQ

Is jazz guitar hard for beginners?

The basics (7th chords and ii-V-I) are accessible to intermediate guitarists. Advanced jazz requires years of study, but the entry point is lower than expected.

What’s the most important jazz chord?

The dominant 7th - it appears in every jazz standard and is the tension chord that drives harmonic movement.

Do I need to read music for jazz guitar?

Helpful but not essential for comping. Reading chord charts (lead sheets) is more important than reading standard notation for rhythm jazz guitar.

People Also Ask

What chords do jazz guitarists use? Major 7ths, minor 7ths, dominant 7ths, and their extensions (9ths, 11ths, 13ths). These create the rich harmonic sound of jazz.

What is ii-V-I in jazz? The most important progression in jazz: a minor 7th chord (ii) → dominant 7th (V) → major 7th (I). It appears in nearly every jazz standard.

Can I learn jazz guitar on my own? Yes, with focused study. Start with 7th chord voicings and ii-V-I progressions, then expand to standards and improvisation.
